| Our starting point is the West Basin of St Katherine Dock vibrant with its cafes and restaurants.
| With your back to the Tower of London walk along the Dock. Go past the Elephant gate on one side and Ivory House on the other and into the East Basin.
| Continue to go round the East Basin. Take the second exit out of the Dock and cross the road into Moretown Square (previously St Thomas More Square) and continue past Waitrose. Turn right when you reach the road and continue until, on the right, you see some steps going down to the now ornamental canal (once a working canal linking docks to the river).
| Go down the steps. | |
| Walk along the canal which you will be following to the other side of Wapping. A lovely path for walkers, runners and cyclists. Ahead you will see the spire of St. George in the East church, one of the Hawksmoor churches.
| Keep following the canal. Look out for the statue of Rennie who designed the original docks. After a couple of turns you will pass Tobacco Dock originally, as its name suggests, used for the import of tobacco but now, after a failed attempt as a shopping centre, used for exhibitions and events. The impressive looking remains of a ship is ornamental.
| Continue on under the road bridge. The path will now take you through Wapping Woods (now reduced to a copse but still a welcome green space) and pick up the canal again and go under one of the Bascule bridges we have in Wapping (no longer working).
| You will then arrive at Shadwell Basin. This basin is used by the water sports centre for canoeing and sailing as well as the Saturday food market, the fishing club and some fitness equipment which is free to use. Turn left and skirt the Basin until you reach the road. We have now reached the end of Wapping, but if you cross the road and continue straight on through a passage you will enter King Edwards Park and you can then join the Thames and walk or cycle along it to reach Limehouse.
| On this walk we will return along the road. So turn right, cross the second Bascule bridge and in front you will see “The Prospect of Whitby” one of the historical pubs that front the river.
| You are now on Wapping Wall where old warehouses have been repurposed into flats. Continuing your walk, the road will bend to the left and becomes Wapping High Street. You will pass Wapping Overground Station with direct links to the Jubilee and the Elizabeth lines. The road to the right is Wapping Lane where we have our butcher, greengrocer, pharmacy, Post Office and health centre.
| Next we pass another of our riverside pubs “The Captain Kidd”.
| Then the Marine Police originally founded to protect the goods arriving at the docks and its formation possibly predates even the Bow Street runners.
| At this point we will take a diversion away from the river. So just before the riverside gardens turn into Wapping Rose Garden and go straight through it to the road (Green bank).
| Then turn left passing Wapping Gardens with its tennis and basketball courts and childrens’ and adult play equipment.
| At the end of the road you will pass the “Turks Head” now a restaurant and coffee shop with seating both in their garden and in the park.
| In front of you are the high walls of an old dock which now enclose a sports centre where the old dock has been filled in to create a sports field. Turn left into the old church yard.
| Look to your left to see the entrance to the 17th century school.
| At the end of the churchyard you will come back onto Wapping High Street. Turn right to pass the “Town of Ramsgate” our “local” and then on the left you will see a small private garden which was originally the entrance to the dock. On either side are what were Georgian dock managers houses. Then pass Capital Wharf on to the Memorial Gardens, continue along St Katherine Way and in 5 minutes you will be back at St Katherine Dock – this time at the Central basin. |
